Laboratory

The CLIA certified laboratory provides testing for inpatients, emergency room patients, area nursing homes as well as outpatients with physician orders from Aledo and surrounding areas. The licensed medical technicians and technologists provide quick and accurate test results 24 hours a day. An outpatient pre-registration service is provided for your added convenience. A wide range of test procedures can be performed on the state-of-the-art equipment.
Phlebotomy
Blood samples are drawn for testing at Mercer County Hospital and specimens are collected and processed.

Blood Bank
22 units of blood are provided by American Red Cross and routinely stored in the laboratory. Prior to receiving a transfusion, the patient's blood is tested with the donor's blood for blood type and Rh, unusual antibodies, and compatibility.
Hematology
Complete blood counts are performed which includes hemoglobin, red blood cell count, white blood cell count, platelet count, and differentiation of white blood cells under the microscope.

Coagulation
Tests are routinely performed to monitor anticoagulants such as coumadin and heparin and evaluate the patient's ability to properly clot before surgery.
Urinalysis
Complete urinalyses are performed for ten different chemical tests and a microscopic examination.
Serology
Tests for diagnosis of Strep A infection, Mononucleosis, Influenza, RSV, HIV, & Mycoplasma pneumonia can all be performed quickly in this area of the lab.
Chemistry and Special Chemistry
Very specialized instruments can perform over 70 different tests simultaneously.

Microbiology
Cultures are obtained various body sites, the organism is identified, and an antibiotic sensitivity is performed to determine which antibiotic will best fight the patient's pathogenic disease. Antigen test for infectious diseases such as Rotavirus, Giardia, and Chlamydia are also performed.
